King’s Cross Recruitment Centre, London N1C

An invited competition to design a non-profit recruitment centre for the King’s Cross mixed-use development. This unit fit-out is located in the newly restored and refurbished, Grade II listed Western Transit Shed.

The competition concept for the unit was to ‘bring the outside in’. Reclaimed timber, internal brickwork and illuminated yellow fabric light features provide a rich variety of colour and texture. The light features highlight the entry point and provide ‘sunshine’ in the depth of the plan.

The purpose of the unit was to ‘raise the bar’ and deliver a positive message on working in the area, achieved by providing a strong public identity and open / welcoming feel. The unit also provides: interview rooms, a training room, office space and back of house facilities.

In the design process with the client, a Visitor Centre was incorporated into the entrance space (previously located in the Granary Building) with the reception and seating for the recruitment centre. The final fit-out of the unit was revised to meet the client’s budget requirements and Pipers Design provided the exhibition fit-out of the interactive model of the development as well as wall screens / display.
