'An outstanding working environment and patient experience that ‘lift the spirits’ of those that use and work in the building.’ Sonnemann Toon were appointed to transform former open plan office and outdated clinical accommodation, to house new state of the art cardiology and cardiac surgical services.
Working through the challenges of dated infrastructure and a congested operational site, the multiphased internal fitout provided a 1.5T MRI and interventional suite with a biplane imaging facility, a 10 bed paediatric intensive care unit and an 18 bed cardiac ward. Pairs of bedrooms were divided by sliding smart screens to allow rooms to be joined when siblings were being treated together.
Embedded artwork was an important element of the design, not only to assist navigation for families, but to provide a vibrant and engaging interior that positively distracts children during their stay. Medical equipment is discreetly integrated allowing the overriding impression to be bright and cheerful; a therapeutic playful environment for children’s care.
