Guys Hospital Linac, London

The installation of the latest laser-guided Linac equipment at The London Radiotherapy Centre at Guy’s Hospital required the old bunker to be stripped back to its concrete skeleton and refitted anew. The client’s aspiration was to provide a fresh and airy patient environment to ensure a relaxing ambience. Sonnemann Toon Architects designed a simple layout, decluttering spaces and raising ceiling heights. Clean geometry, pale natural finishes and use of daylight imitating LED panels transformed the underground shell into comfortable diagnostic spaces with an illusion of views of landscape and sky. Crafted bespoke joinery allowed for a patient change enclosure, new offices and even a high-end cycle storage solution. The construction process was carefully managed adjacent to a busy outpatients department, which took place in phases without interrupting operation of the Centre.
